Analysis uses hourly solar radiation data from Open-Meteo (free tier, ERA5/CAMS). Sun position calculated using the NOAA Solar Position Algorithm — pure mathematics, no external service. Terrain elevation from Open-Elevation SRTM 90m with Open-Meteo fallback.
GTI (Global Tilted Irradiance) is recalculated client-side using beam/diffuse decomposition and your panel angle — not interpolated. Results are intended for initial feasibility planning only and should not replace on-site pyranometer measurement.

Solar data: Open-Meteo free tier (ERA5/CAMS reanalysis). Terrain: Open-Elevation SRTM 90m with Open-Meteo fallback. Sun position: NOAA Solar Position Algorithm (pure math). GTI calculated client-side using beam/diffuse decomposition — real physics, not interpolation. Temp derating: 0.4%/°C above 25°C. Elevation bonus: standard atmosphere model. Tracker gains: industry standard ±28–40%.

What is Panel Tilt (β)?
The angle of your solar panel measured from horizontal. 0° = flat on roof. 90° = perfectly vertical (like a wall). The optimal angle depends on your latitude and season.
Why it matters
The tilt angle determines the angle of incidence — the angle between incoming sun rays and your panel surface normal. When rays hit perpendicular (0° incidence), you capture 100% of available radiation. At 60° incidence, you capture only 50% (cosine law).
Formula: GTI = GHI × cos(incidence angle)
India recommendation: Optimal fixed tilt ≈ your latitude angle (±5°). For Maharashtra (~18°N): 15°–20° year-round. For Punjab (~30°N): 25°–30°. Steeper in winter, flatter in summer. If you can only pick one angle — use your latitude.
What is Panel Azimuth (γ)?
The compass direction your panel faces. 0° = South, −90° = East, +90° = West, ±180° = North. This determines which hours of the day your panel captures peak energy.
Run analysis first to see calculated direction efficiency
Split array strategy: If your roof faces East-West, consider splitting — 50% East + 50% West panels. You lose 15–20% vs pure South but get a wider generation window and flatter daily curve — better for self-consumption and battery charging.
Magnetic vs true South: Your compass shows magnetic south. In India, magnetic declination is approximately 0°–5° West. For precision: use true south (check NOAA magnetic declination calculator for your location).
